The dragon fruit scientific name is Hylocereus from family Cactaceae and normamly called as pitaya. It is native to Central and South America. The colour of flesh dragon fruit is red, white, or magenta depended to variety. You can eat it chilled or cold, the choice is all yours but what you should know is that it is mandatory to eat the pitaya fruit! The fruit is juicy with sweet taste similar to watermelon and consist of petite black seeds. The appearance look brilliant pink to red, green tip overlapping rind and in oblong shape made it unique from other fruit. Besides being tasty , this fruit possess of a lot of juicy and essential minerals with various nutrition ingredients. It is recognized as most nutritious among fruits and famous in many Asia countries.

 

Varieties of Dragon Fruit in Malaysia


Dragon fruit is now grown huge in Johore, Penang and Perak as commercially. Below is the two type variety famous in Malaysia:
• Hylocereus undatus (red pitaya) has red-skinned fruit with white flesh. This is the most commonly-seen "dragon fruit".
• Hylocereus costaricensis (Costa Rica pitaya, often called H. polyrhizus) has red-skinned fruit with red flesh
• Hylocereus megalanthus (yellow pitaya, formerly in Selenicereus) has yellow-skinned fruit with white flesh.


 

How the dragon Fruit Look?

 


In Malaysia, the fruit grown huge at Johor, Perak and Selangor state. It grown well at tropical climates region such as Malaysia with a moderate amount of rain around 500 to 1200mm of rain with temperature between 30 to 40 degree Celsius. Dragon fruits a type of cactus with no leaves . Normally you can see the cement pillar or wood use to support this climbing plant . The plants only bloom the large white fragrant flower in bell shape , 1 foot long and 9 inches wide between 3 to 5 times a year depend on soil and climate condition. The flower called Queen of the night as its only blooms early evening while wilt by daybreak. The fruit only grow after 30 to 50 days flowering. The fruit can weight from 300 to 650 grams.
